What is speech pathology?

There might be more involved in speech pathology than you thought. Here is a quick summary of what speech pathologists do. Speech pathologists diagnose and treat people who have communication and swallowing disorders. Including:

– difficulties with pronouncing sounds

– understanding and using language

– reading

– writing

– stuttering

– using the voice

– difficulties with swallowing food and drink

These issues may be the result of a range of factors such as developmental delay, brain injury, stroke, autism or a number of other reasons. Speech pathologist are qualified to work with people of all ages such as babies with developmental delays, children needing support at school and adults who stutter or have had a stroke or accident.

Speech pathologists work with the individual person or family to establish goals and then provide short term steps to work towards the goals. They may also work alongside a multidisciplinary team including occupational therapists, dentists, physiotherapists or other health professionals to achieve the best outcomes. Speech pathologists need to study at university and complete practical experience to be able to provide services to target such a wide range of difficulties.
